What Is Harmonic Mixing?

Harmonic mixing is a DJ technique where you transition between tracks that share compatible musical keys. Instead of clashing frequencies and dissonant overlaps, harmonic mixes create smooth, musical transitions that keep the energy flowing on the dance floor.

The secret weapon behind harmonic mixing is the Camelot wheel — a simplified system that maps all 24 musical keys onto a numbered circle. Keys labeled with the letter A are minor, B are major. Adjacent keys on the wheel (same number, or one step up/down) are always compatible.

HarmonicDrops teaches you this system through gameplay. Instead of memorizing charts, you learn by doing — placing blocks, hearing which mixes work, and building an intuition for key relationships.

How to Play HarmonicDrops

  1. Blocks fall — Musical keys from the Camelot wheel drop into a 6-column grid, one at a time.
  2. Place them wisely — Click or tap a column to drop the block. It scores points when placed next to a compatible key.
  3. Build combos — Consecutive compatible placements multiply your score. Keep the streak going!
  4. Avoid dissonance — Incompatible keys add dissonance. Fill the meter and the crowd walks out.
  5. Clear rows with "The Drop" — Fill a complete row with all-compatible keys to clear it and earn a bonus.
  6. Progress through 7 stages — From Practice at Home (untimed) to the World Tour finale (30 tracks in 1 minute).

What is the Camelot wheel?
