How To Create A Playlist Using ChatGPT

Unless you've had your head buried in the sand, there's no doubt you'll have heard of OpenAI's revolutionary ChatGPT.

This AI chatbot has been making headlines worldwide thanks to its impressive power and diverse range of applications.

One interesting use for DJs, radio hosts, humble music lovers, and anybody else who might need to make a compilation of music - is its ability to quickly create playlists and come up with ideas for DJ mixes.

In this guide, I'll show you exactly how you can use ChatGPT to generate playlists for any occasion. I'll also share a secret method for quickly turning these playlists into seamless, beat-matched DJ-style mixes - even if you have no DJing experience.

TL;DR - Making Playlists With ChatGPT#

  • ChatGPT is a powerful AI tool, which can be used to suggest playlists (amongst other things)

  • It can be useful for quickly generating ideas for DJ mixes or Making the Perfect Playlist

  • Pairing it with DJ.Studio is the ultimate AI combo for rapidly making playlists and seamless DJ-style mixes in record time.

What is ChatGPT?#

what is chat gpt

ChatGPT is a free AI tool - some describe it as a chatbot, although I personally think the term doesn't do it justice.

You can think of it as an interface with powerful artificial intelligence. Trained on terabytes of digital information from around the internet, ChatGPT 3.5 knows basically anything that was described on the internet before January 2022. (The paid, GPT4.0 has more information, dating up to April 2023 - although you need to pay $20 a month)

It has some limitations, but it can basically answer any of your questions.

It works like this:

  1. You enter a prompt into the text input field

  2. ChatGPT uses AI to create a custom response.

Because it has such broad knowledge, one cool area to use it is to generate playlists - whether you're using it for DJ mixes, or just for your own listening enjoyment.

How To Create a Playlist Using ChatGPT: Step-by-Step#

ChatGPT is like your friend who knows everything about music, although when I say everything, I really mean everything. (Pretty much anyway). Any genre, era, style, mood, you name it. It has a pretty good awareness of most music (apart from the more niche/indie stuff).

Here are some steps to using ChatGPT to create your own playlists.

  1. Open ChatGPT and sign up/sign in.

  2. Type in your playlist request (I'll give some examples and inspiration below).

  3. Click the Submission Arrow, or hit Enter

  4. Wait for ChatGPT to generate its reply

  5. Repeat!

ChatGPT will provide its response in a text format. You'll then need to search for the tracks and create playlists on your music service (like YouTube, Apple Music, or Spotify).

As you can see, it's super easy to use ChatGPT to generate personalized playlists within a matter of seconds - making it a very powerful tool for playlist creation and music discovery.

Here are some examples and extra tips to help you get the most out of this method:

Ask For Genres#

chat gpt genre playlist generation

One of the easiest ways is to simply ask ChatGPT to provide songs in a certain genre, for example:

  • Give me 20 classic hip-hop tracks in a playlist

  • Give me 10 techno tracks

  • Give me 15 drum and bass songs

Ask for Eras#

You can also ask for songs from specific time periods, for example:

  • Give me 10 techno tracks from the 1980s

  • Give me the top 10 pop songs of 1995

  • Give me the most listened-to rock music between 2000 and 2010

This is a nice option if you are looking for music from a certain generation, and want to keep the songs limited to that era.

Ask For Moods#

If you don't want a specific genre, you can simply ask for certain moods.

  • Give me some uplifting electronic music

  • Give me 10 of the new music releases.

  • Give me a playlist of tracks to help me work out to

  • Recommend some music for a Dance Party Playlist

Combine All of the Above#

Of course, given the flexibility of ChatGPT, you can combine any of the above concepts to create custom playlists.

Generate Ideas Based On A User's Listening History#

You can also copy and paste a bunch of your favorite tracks into ChatGPT, and ask it to suggest songs similar based on your listening history. This is a great way to come up with unique playlists based on your favorites.

Ask for extra information#

Another handy feature is asking for some information relating to the playlist.

For example:

  • Give me 10 of the most popular songs in the last decade, and give me a bit of information about each artist

  • Tell me the top 10 most listened-to songs of all time, and explain why each song became so popular.

You can also use it to generate a new playlist description and name (I do this all the time).

For example "Generate a name and description for a playlist, it contains minimal techno and house from the 80s and 90s, and make sure you include terms that will help it rank well on YouTube".

This is useful if you run a YouTube channel and want your playlist to get a better ranking.

As you will see next, this is the perfect combination with DJ.Studio - helping you to rapidly convert your ChatGPT playlist to a seamless mix, share it online, and reach a wide audience.

Notes on 3rd Party Playlist Apps#

You can find some playlist apps that work as an interface between ChatGPT and Spotify/YouTube. You can enter a Spotify playlist prompt, and then it will try to create Spotify playlists (or YouTube) based on the response from ChatGPT. These aren't always very effective, so usually it's best to just make the playlist manually. FlowGPT is one example.

Another example is using the PlaylistAI ChatGPT plugin with Apple Music, and you can find more in ChatGPT 4's plugin store which can integrate with a Spotify account.

DJ.Studio - The Ultimate Playlist Mixing Tool#

what is dj studio

If you want to fully utilize AI for your playlist creation sessions, make sure you don't miss out on harnessing DJ.Studio.

This is a unique AI-powered tool, which is the perfect system for turning ChatGPT's responses into a full DJ mix - no DJ experience required.

Let me explain how it works, and how you can use it with ChatGPT.

What is DJ.Studio?#

DJ.Studio is a unique piece of DJ software that works unlike any other. Rather than making mixes with decks and a mixer, you simply use your keyboard and mouse to arrange and edit a mix on a timeline. This will be familiar to anybody who has used audio editing software.

It has a lot of features that won't fit into this article, so you should check out more info about the website. But I'll explain how you can use it to turn your ChatGPT playlists into a full, seamless mix.

How to use it with your ChatGPT Playlists#

dj studio youtube mode

This is a workflow I use with ChatGPT and DJ.Studio to quickly Make a DJ Playlist and seamless mixes.

  1. Use ChatGPT to generate a playlist.

  2. Open Spotify or YouTube, and create the playlist generated by ChatGPT. You can use a YouTube Playlist Maker.

  3. Open DJ.Studio and create a new mix, using the YouTube mode.

  4. Select either the Spotify or YouTube tab based on where you made your playlist.

  5. Copy your playlist's URL (make sure it's set to public, not private), and paste it into the search field. (Note, that you can also search for songs directly inside DJ.Studio, and don't need to make an external playlist).

  6. Click the + icons to add individual songs, or the + at the top of the list to add them all.

  7. You can now use DJ.Studio's Automix AI to automatically work out the best order for the tracks based on key and tempo - you can also specify how you want the transitions to be generated.

  8. Refine your mix in more detail using the timeline editor, adding effects, loops, automation, and edits where you desire.

  9. Share your mix - Use the Share button to create an online, streamable version of your finished mix. You can share this with a URL or QR code, and listeners only need the internet to check it out, no accounts are required.

This process makes it super fast to create seamless, sharable mixes based on your ChatGPT playlist ideas.

If you want to download your mix, you can use the Local File mode. From here, instead of using YouTube/Spotify playlists, you import downloaded files - so you can buy your playlist, make a mix, and upload it to YouTube, use it on your radio show, or do anything else you want to with a WAV or MP3.
