What is the official hardware controller support for DJ.Studio? Is the Mixmeister controller compatible?#

Currently, DJ.Studio does not offer official support for any external hardware MIDI controllers, including the Mixmeister controller.

DJ.Studio is designed from the ground up as a 'DAW for DJs', meaning its workflow is optimized for the precision and speed of a keyboard and mouse. The power of the software lies in its timeline-based editor, allowing you to arrange tracks, fine-tune transitions, and edit your entire mix with a level of detail that is best achieved in a desktop studio environment.

While traditional DJ software relies on controllers for real-time manipulation, DJ.Studio focuses on the preparation and production phase. We are always listening to feedback from our community, but for now, the most powerful way to experience DJ.Studio is with your keyboard and mouse.

Can I use my DJ.Studio license on both a Mac and a Windows PC?#

Yes, absolutely. Your DJ.Studio license is designed for flexibility. You can activate your license on up to two computers simultaneously, regardless of their operating system.

This allows you to use the software on any combination of machines you own—for example, a Windows desktop in your studio and a MacBook for when you're on the go, or any other pairing. Your license is tied to your account, not a specific type of computer.

Are there plans for a mobile (iOS/Android) version of DJ.Studio?#

At present, we do not have plans to develop a mobile version of the full DJ.Studio software.

While we have explored this in the past, our focus has shifted to integrating highly advanced, resource-intensive technologies directly into the desktop application. Features like our AI-powered stem separation, precise beat-grid detection, and complex phrase analysis require the processing power that modern laptops and desktop computers provide.

Porting this functionality to a mobile device would mean building an entirely new application from the ground up. Our current priority is to continue enhancing the core desktop experience and expanding the powerful feature set for DJs on macOS and Windows.

Will there be a native Linux version of DJ.Studio?#

There are currently no plans to develop or officially support a native version of DJ.Studio for Linux distributions. Our development and support resources are focused on providing the most stable and powerful experience for our user base on Windows and macOS.

While some technically advanced users might be able to run the Windows version using compatibility layers like Wine or Proton, this is not an officially supported configuration. Therefore, we cannot guarantee performance, stability, or provide technical assistance for users on Linux.

Can I run DJ.Studio 3.1 and 4.0 side-by-side on one machine (separate folders)? Can I roll back safely?#

Yes, you can install DJ.Studio and DJ.Studio Next, together on one machine.
That’s the whole goal of DJ.Studio Next

https://help.dj.studio/en/articles/11031350-dj-studio-next

DJ.Studio 4.0 is not officially released yet, but you can try it out via DJ.Studio Next.
We hope you have some time to test around and let us know issues you run into.

  1. Download the app via this link and install it "next" to your regular DJ.Studio.

  2. Sign in with the same credentials you see at Settings > account in DJ.Studio 3.1

  3. Don't run the two apps at the same time. It is not made for that. It will not corrupt the database but the apps are not aware of each other.

  4. DJS Next and DJ.Studio are two separate apps, so any settings or preferences you've configured in DJ.Studio will need to be set again in the DJS Next app.

  5. DJS Next and DJ.Studio use the same database by default. If you want to change this go to Settings > Folders and change the database location.
You can copy the database to the new folder, so you can access all your projects or backup and import separate projects.

  6. Watch the video or read the documentation. At the bottom of the release notes, there is a list of known issues that we are aware of that need to be fixed.

  7. 🐛 If you run into an issue, please send it to us via the speech bubble in the app or mail to support@dj.studio.
Always mention "4.0" in your messages to make sure your messages get sent to a human agent directly.
Then just switch back to DJ.Studio 3.1 to do what you needed to do.

Enjoy and let us know how it goes!

What is the difference between DJ.Studio Next and version 4.0?#

This is a great question that helps clarify our development process. Think of DJ.Studio Next as our permanent "early access" or public beta program. It's a separate application, identifiable by its yellow icon, where we release features that are still in development.

  • DJ.Studio Next (Yellow Icon): This is the testing ground. It gives our users a chance to try out the latest innovations and provide feedback while the features are not yet fully stable.

  • Version 4.0: This is the name of our next major, official update.

Right now, the features being tested in DJ.Studio Next are the ones that will be included in version 4.0. So, at this moment, using "Next" is how you beta test the upcoming 4.0 release.

Once we are confident that version 4.0 is stable and ready, it will be rolled out as an official update to the main DJ.Studio application (the one with the black icon). At that point, the "Next" app will move on to testing features for a future version, such as 4.1.

How do I upgrade from the DJ.Studio Next beta to the official 4.0? Do I need to uninstall previous versions?#

You don't "upgrade" from the beta - instead, your main app updates itself. It's essential that you keep both the main DJ.Studio app (black icon) and the DJ.Studio Next app (yellow icon) installed on your machine.

Think of it like this:

  • Current Situation:

    • DJ.Studio (Black Icon): This is your current stable version (e.g., 3.1).

    • DJ.Studio Next (Yellow Icon): This is your beta version where you test upcoming 4.0 features.

  • When Version 4.0 is Released:

    • Your main DJ.Studio (Black Icon) app will automatically update from 3.1 to the new, stable 4.0 version.

    • Your DJ.Studio Next (Yellow Icon) app will remain as the beta channel, and will soon begin testing features for the next version (e.g., 4.1).

⚠️ Crucially, if you have uninstalled the main (black) application, you will not receive the automatic update to the stable 4.0 version. You must keep it installed to get the official release.

Is high-quality stem separation in DJ.Studio 4.0 improved vs. the current v3?#

Yes, the stem separation in version 4.0 is a significant improvement over previous versions, offering higher-quality results and a more efficient installation.

We've upgraded the underlying AI models to provide you with cleaner, more professional-sounding stems. This means you can create more precise acapellas and instrumentals for your mixes and mashups.

The new models we use are:

  • For standard 4-Stem separation (Vocals, Drums, Bass, Other): We now use the htDemucs model, known for its excellent balance of speed and quality.

  • For High-Quality (HQ) 2-Stem separation: We use the industry-leading MDX'23 models for both Vocal and Instrumental isolations, resulting in exceptionally clean and crisp outputs.

Smaller Installation Size: Beyond the quality improvements, we have also heavily optimized the feature's footprint on your system. Previously, the stem separation package required a 1 GB download on Windows. We have now reduced this to just 300 MB, saving you valuable disk space and making the setup process much faster.
