TL;DR - Rekordbox Alternative#
Rekordbox is a professional DJ software, it is great for live mixing and is known by DJs and music producers alike.
Although it is highly thought of, there is alternative software that can be used instead of Rekordbox.
Using DJ.Studio gives you the ability to create a mix without the constraints of recording a live mix using its unique timeline display.
DJ.Studio is a great tool that works alongside Rekordbox, but are there any other apps out there?
What is Rekordbox?#
Rekordbox is known as one of the most used software out there, it is used by many DJs who like to mix music live, let's take a look at what Rekordbox is and some of the downfalls of Rekordbox.
Rekordbox is a DJ software developed by Pioneer DJ that helps you organize your music library, set cue points, and prepare your tracks for live performances. If you're using Pioneer hardware, you'll appreciate how easily it integrates, making it a go-to choice for many DJs already invested in that ecosystem.
It has music management capabilities, a good interface, and an interesting feature set, catering to both beginners and professionals. It has analytical tools for track selection and performance planning, ensuring smooth, well-structured sets.
Beyond its music organization and hardware integration, Rekordbox also offers a range of performance-enhancing tools that make live DJing more dynamic. Its waveform display provides visual insights into track structure, while features like Beat Sync, Quantize, and Slip Mode help you execute precise transitions and creative mixes with confidence.
The software also includes DVS support for turntable control, a lighting mode for automated DMX light syncing, and Cloud Library Sync, allowing you to access your playlists from multiple devices. Whether you're performing in a club, recording a mix, or managing an extensive track collection, Rekordbox delivers a great DJing experience designed to keep you in control.
Are There Any Negatives to Using Rekordbox?#
While Rekordbox has its strengths, like most things in life, there are inevitably going to be some issues with it, let's take a look below:
Limited Flexibility with Non-Pioneer Gear – One of the biggest challenges you’ll face is Rekordbox’s tight integration with Pioneer hardware. If you ever switch to a different brand of DJ gear, the transition can feel clunky, which can be frustrating if you're looking into a different setup.
Steep Learning Curve for Some Features – While Rekordbox has a lot of features, some of its advanced tools can feel overwhelming. It may take extra time to fully master, which can be a hurdle if you need to quickly adapt.
Mixes Need to be Recorded in Real Time - Although people may find this useful especially if they are practicing for a live set, having to record and then re-record to get the perfect take can be frustrating and time-consuming.
Cost Considerations - Although there is a free version of Rekordbox, you don't get all the key features that you would be entitled to when paying for it, the problem is, that its pricing model might not fit every budget. If you're just starting out or working with limited resources, you might find other DJ software that offers a better balance between cost and functionality.
In my experience, if you want to invest in the full Pioneer gear and don’t mind a bit of a learning curve, Rekordbox can be a solid choice. However, if you’re looking for a more flexible or budget-friendly option, it might be worth exploring other DJ software solutions. Why not give DJ.Studio a go and see how it can help. Download now!
DJ.Studio is the Best Rekordbox Alternative#
Now we know about Rekordbox, what it is, what it can do, and some of its core issues, let's have a look at the alternative, DJ.Studio, which is up and coming to be an industry-standard DJ software. Here we will see what's good about it, and how we can use this in line with Rekordbox.
Why Choose DJ.Studio?#
DJ.Studio offers a fresh approach to DJing whilst also being easy to use. The intuitive interface is clean and user-friendly, so you can jump straight into your mixes without wasting time navigating through a maze of menus. Here are a few things that stand out when using DJ.Studio:
Ease of Use: The learning curve feels gentle, making it perfect if you're new to DJing or if you want a straightforward tool that doesn’t compromise on performance.
Flexible Workflow: One of the biggest perks of DJ.Studio is its adaptability. As DJ.Studio is not for live mixing, it gives you the ability to have fun in a studio setting with many features which make it quick and easy.
Robust Feature Set: Despite being an alternative to the industry standard, DJ.Studio is packed with features that can help you become more creative.

Why DJ.Studio Is a Companion, But Not Total Replacement, for Rekordbox#
While DJ.Studio offers a lot, I must admit it doesn’t completely replicate the full experience of Rekordbox - especially when you're looking to DJ live sets. Here’s why I see it as a complementary tool rather than a full replacement:
Hardware Integration Limitations: Rekordbox shines when it comes to integrating with Pioneer hardware. While DJ.Studio is versatile, it is not designed to integrate with DJ equipment, however, this unique ability allows you to do all of your mixes with just a mouse and keyboard saving you money on expensive equipment.
Hybrid Workflow Advantage: This is where DJ.Studio truly shines, it complements your existing setup perfectly. I use it alongside Rekordbox to build a more flexible workflow that leverages the best of both worlds. It gives me a backup option and an additional set of creative tools, which has proven invaluable in planning live gigs and studio sessions alike.
In my journey as a DJ, having options means I can adapt to any situation. While Rekordbox remains an industry favorite, DJ.Studio offers a refreshing alternative that improves my overall workflow, providing flexibility and cost savings without sacrificing on performance.
Whether you’re just starting out or looking to diversify your setup, DJ.Studio is definitely worth checking out. Try now for free today! Download here.

Another cool feature of using DJ.Studio is the ability to export your mix directly to Rekordbox. Here are the steps of how to do just that:
Click Export > DJ Set > Rekordbox. Make sure Add Hotcues is enabled.
You will then need to click Export again so the project can be sent to rekordbox.
This will create a new playlist in Rekordbox which will have the same name as you DJ.Studio project.
Your tracks will be copied to that new playlist with the hot cues based on the transitions in this mix project.
To note, you will have to close and then reopen Rekordbox if you already had it open whilst you were exporting.
Now you need to open Rekordbox, and find your new playlist in the browser window.
Rekordbox will need to analyze the tracks. Highlight the tracks that are in the playlist, right-click on them, and then select Analyze Tracks.
If you want to export the DJ.Studio beatgrid make sure to disable BPM/Grid analysis
Now you will see all the hot-cue appear in your tracks in rekordbox.
There will be 8 cues on the left track, starting with A; there will be 8 starting with B on the right deck.
Play the first track on the left.
The 1st hot cue highlights where to start playing the track from
The 2nd then shows when to start bringing up the volume.
The 3rd will show you the mid-point of the transition
The new track should be fully mixed in by the 4th cue
The last 4 tracks show you when to start transitioning to the next track
